The Boy's Big Toe

It's looking a little bit better. From the nasty photos we've seen online I'm still a little worried. The Boy looked up in his medical journals and databases all the must do medical type things for Brown Recluse spider bites. He's been throwing around fancy medical words and pretty much treating this as a learning experience. As soon as he started feeling well again that is. According to what we've read this sore could take up to 4 weeks to heal.

I totally called it when I handed him 4 Benadryl and a glass of water. I should have been a doctor.

Librarian Doctor! She looks up what ails you!

That has a nice superhero ring to it. Think the major networks would pick it up?

The part could be played by some sexy actress (All superwomen should be played by sexy actresses). Her hair in a bun, glasses on a chain, a stethoscope tucked into her lab coat pocket which hides her sensible jumper. By day she's a mild mannered librarian but when someone is in distress (which she can hear with her ultrasonic hearing because she hasn't screwed it up by working in an environment with a lot of noise. All that shushing is paying off) She pulls out her stethoscope, whips off her glasses and runs to the rescue in her sensible low-heeled shoes.

What does this have to do with his toe. Nothing. As he says; "You've got to make it all about you". Yeah, well it's my blog.

With frequent doses of Benadryl, gargling and rinsing with Hydrogen Peroxide (just don't swallow it) and elevating his foot. He is now feeling so much better. He's been able to eat solid food, can move around without feeling like an arthritis victim, and his head is not threatening to fall off his neck. Of course, he can't put shoes on yet. Or at least that was his excuse for why he didn't take the garbage out.

Thank you all for your concern. Saturday was pretty scary. I kept waking him up like he was a baby that you worry has stopped breathing though they never do but you have to check on them anyway.

Love,
M

  2. May I say "Ewwww"?

    Ewwww.

It's a Mom thing, you know - after 3 kids and 2 stepkids, I can diagnose just about anything. The Young One came down with some hideous rash earlier this year and all the doctor said was "it's caused by a virus." By doing a little research, I discovered it was pityriasis rosea, a benign rash which cause is really unknown - it might be viral.

Take that, doctors - Moms have you beat to heck and back.

  3. Michele -- Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry about your son's spider bite. So scary for you. Wonderful to hear that he's getting better. And please don't stop your food blogging -- love your recipes!

  4. Gargling with HP? Never heard of it! What is that supposed to help with? Otherwise, the toe looks pretty healthy. I hope it heals quick and you're right. It is your blog. You are the one who drives this bus. Ego all you want!

  5. SK: HP is great for canker sores. It puts oxygen in your mouth. Bacteria loves warm wet non oxygen places. The extra oxygen doesn't allow it a place to grow. Works like a charm. We were told this by a dentist and have been using this treatment for years.

  6. Now I've totally got MJ's song Liberian Girl stuck in my head. At least it knocked out the Heal the World that's been on a playback loop for long enough to make me brush my teeth with bacitracin.

Anyhow, about the foot: EEW and OUCH

  7. Obviously, as I'm sure you know by now, I read "librarian" as "Liberian". Which explains my nonsensical comment. But in any case, I still have Liberian Girl stuck in my head now.

I would be embarrassed, but I have no shame. Or pride, for that matter.

  8. The bite does look familar....very. And, although mine was from the fiddleback (a cousin) it took me weeks to lose the headache and weeks to have the bite heal. The fever and body aches went away slowly. Tell him to rest. Gosh, now you can tell I'm acting like a bossey aunt!

  10. Michele, you missed your calling and should of been a doctor! Join the boy in medical school and maybe you can get a 2 for 1 deal?

Eeeew. Ouch. Hope it heals fast for him! And maybe then you can get some sleep!

Zach has a few freebie cars that he has gotten running. Will sell them for cheap? A Beretta and a Chevette.

  11. Keep watching that little bugger. I have a friend who thought her bite was healing and it took a turn as soon as she laid off the treatments. Hope he's feeling better. Just had our house sprayed for spiders AGAIN! Hate those creepy things.

  12. Poor baby, had no idea that nasty spider had such a bite.

  13. That bite looks nasty!

Okay Super-Librarian Doctor, save me from this nagging cough which won't let me sleep for more than 5 minutes at a time.

  14. My goodness.

That bite would totally freak me out too.

    I hope he heals quickly.

  15. I'm so glad you're on the other side of the worst of it but wow, that bite looks so nasty.

    Poor guy!

  16. So why gargling with peroxide if the bite is on his foot? Weird.

Oh man, that looks terrible. I was thinking about that stupid spider all night last night (instead of sleeping). How can you guys sleep in that house after that incident? It's time to move to a bubble.

Glad The Boy is feeling better and I do think you should get your own superhero librarian sitcom.

  17. OMG! I've been totally out of it and haven't been on the internet much and totally missed this. Brown Recluse spider bites are all kinds of nasty and I've heard horror stories about what they've done to people around here. SO glad he's okay!
