Halloween Fast Facts from the US Census

36 million: The estimated number of potential trick-or-treaters in 2008 — children 5 to 13 — across the United States. JR is using this as an excuse to buy more candy.

111.4 million: Number of occupied housing units across the nation in 2008 — all potential stops for trick-or-treaters. This doesn't indicate the number of houses that will turn their lights off and sit in the dark because they are party poopers.

93% Percentage of households with residents who consider their neighborhood safe. I'm part of the 93%.

1.1 billion pounds: Total production of pumpkins by major pumpkin-producing states in 2008. I've got one sitting on my table waiting for me to gut it. I can smell it's fear. Or has it been there a little too long? Nope, that's fear.

23.8 pounds Per capita consumption of candy by Americans in 2008. The ratio at our house; 1.8 pounds for Michele, 22 pounds for JR. And, he never gains a freaking ounce. I smell candy and the scale tips a little higher. The jerk!

This information was brought to from the fine folks at the U.S. Census Bureau: see Facts for Features for more.

Today's Spin Cycle was brought to you from Michele in cooperation with the Sprite's Keeper Foundation. "Building a better blogging world one spin at a time". Check out Sprite's Keeper for more information on how you can get involved.

  3. I love the motto! I officially adopt it!
We will be joining the masses this year for Sprite's first foray into candy related debauchery. Wish me (and my scale) luck.
    You're linked!

  4. We will be gone this year so the three trick or treaters we do get that are well over the age of 13 will be blamed for any egging!!! LOL

I am not buying one bag of candy this year either! Hows that for a party pooper? I am not tipping that scale ever the more!

  5. Ahem. Was I supposed to stop trick or treating when I turned 13?

  6. One year I procrastinated buying candy and then became super sick. NO CANDY. My husband was working a lot...so...on Halloween night I sat in the dark and listened to disgruntled children bang on my door. (Dumb kids...no lights were on, move along!)

Now I buy in advance, and eat it all month. I have about 15 bags of candy. I'm all set...

  7. At the work lunch table yesterday, one of the teachers said she has never eaten pumpkin except for pumpkin pie. Only carved it out at Halloween.

A discussion followed where we all chimed in our favorite pumkin recipes...

  8. We never get trick or treaters. They head right for the towns and subdivisons.

Our grandchildren come, but that is all. Also, Misty really doesn't take them tick or treating but to halloween parties as she feels it is safer.

  10. That is mind boggling to know how much candy is consumed.

  11. Retailers here are tyring hard to push Halloween on us. I wasn't sure if they got it right when I saw a bag of packaged lollies in Woolies this morning when said "Pick a treat" on it. I always thought it was "Trick or treat."

  12. That's a lot of candy.

And it's so true that when a house is dark on Halloween, I suspect them of party pooperdom. Though they may have a very good reason for not handing out candy, like somebody died, or they're traveling in another dimension. But still.
