Spool ornaments

I've been feeling all crafty lately.  I'm pretty sure it is some kind of sickness. I may need to seek professional advice. I'm thinking there is a pill for this but maybe not.

I decided that I wanted to do something with ornaments. It seems that I get this wild hair every few years or so that requires me to make ornaments that I don't need and that no one needs me to give them. I told you...it is a sickness. In 2010 I did the wine cork ornaments how-to and just about punctured my fingers getting the process. Getting the wire through the wine corks was a little more than I bargained for.

I thought to reprise this how-to with a simple "let's pull out the electric drill with a small bit" process addition but totally rethought the deal. The rethinking was done under the influence of one cup of coffee instead of the glass (or two) of wine that the other post was delivered under. May or may not have had anything to do with it.

Then a light bulb went off in my head (in a good way), what already has a hole drilled in it and vaguely looks like a wine cork?

Why, a wood spool of thread, of course.

It seems that I had just the thing. As an admitted pack rat I had been toting around some of my mother-in-laws old wooden spools of thread in a very cool old Christmas tin. I'm not sure whether I was keeping the tin or the spools but I don't think it matters now.

First thing this morning (6am) I pulled out the tin, my bucket o'beads, some jewelry making stuff, some old costume jewelry I haven't parted with because I just knew I was going to need it later and I was off.

Seriously, what was I thinking with the wine corks? This project was SO much easier. I whipped these out in about 20 minutes.

I left the thread on because I thought it was pretty and because if I want to use the thread later I can by just discombobulating them.

If you don't have spools of thread just hanging around your house like I do you can always buy them. This place sells them without the thread. This place has some other spool ornament ideas. And, this site has a bunch of ideas on what to do with spools. My personal favorite is the hooks. I need a coat rack just inside my kitchen door. What better and cheaper thing than a few spools screwed onto a piece of scrap wood. I've got both at my house right now!

So that is what I was up to this morning before work. I may make a few more before the day is done just to fill out the numbers. My mom might like them for a gift this year. Seeing as I never know what to get her these might be just the thing. This might be like those gifts that you make in elementary school that your mother couldn't possibly part with because you made it with your own two widdle hands.

Huh, what were you doing at 6am? I hope sleeping like a normal person.

Peace out,
M
