New Years Resolutions

Every year at the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, people throw around the idea of resolutions. If they are anything like me, they say things like lose weight, save money, yada, yada, yada. And, if like me, they fall down on these resolutions within the month. Or like me they just say screw it and not make any resolutions.

This year I am making one resolution. Just one. Just one that I think is the most important resolution I've ever made.

This year my resolution is to do one act of kindness every single day.

I'm not talking about giving money. That I do already. Every month I give $20 to St Jude's and have pledged to continue for no less than 26 months. This is my #26acts pledge that Anne Curry started after the Sandy Hook school shooting. It's nice but it is easy. I don't have to think about it. This donation comes out of my bank account every month without any action from me. This is not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about small acts that take nothing out of my day but time, patience, and maybe a little money. I resolve to act kindly to everyone but to also do acts of kindness. Things like helping people at the grocery store, letting drivers merge in front of me (yes, I'll be that ass that lets the jerk in with the hopes that the jerk will play it forward), watching people's pets without the expectation of them doing it for me, giving my store coupon to the customer behind me and many other little things like this.

I plan to be more cognizant of kind acts that I can do for someone, anyone every single day. The more the better but at least one a day.

This is my part of playing it forward, of just making my small part of the world a little nicer.

So that's it. That is my New Year's resolution. To do one act of kindness every single day.

Did you or do you plan to make a New Year's resolution this year?

Love,
M

  1. Excellent.
I don't normally make New Years reservations, but this year I pledge to stop using "busy" as an excuse.

  4. I love your idea! Maybe I'll adopt it since I usually don't make resolutions - even with my optimistic personality I don't like to set myself up for failure by making resolutions. ;) But your idea? I could embrace that - and not worry about failure. ;)

Happy New Year, Michele! Here's hoping 2013 is absolutely amazing! :)

  5. That is just about the perfect goal for 2013. I love it! And those little things do count so much. I love being handed coupons when I'm waiting in line, since I usually don't have one! (I'm very unorganized!)

  7. Such a lovely resolution. One that everyone should have! Mine is to try to be more organized. I lost my 1/4 measuring cup the other day...I mean, HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?!?
