Last week I sent most of the week in La Jolla, CA. For those that may not know where La Jolla is it is just a tiny bit north of San Diego. I was there to learn some more about copyright law. Boring! Actually, not for me but I suspect for others it would be. Out of 20 people there were only 4 librarians. The rest were lawyers for academic institutions. That's right...I spent 2.5 days in a room full of lawyers. That is some fun right there. Just try to get a straight answer. It just isn't going to happen.
We had a little time to kill on the first day so we grabbed a bus to the beach. Sure we have beaches here but the Galveston beach is just not the same as the Pacific. For one thing it wasn't as hot, only about 75 degrees with no humidity. Galveston at this time of year clocks in at around 95 degrees with 95% humidity and is no place to be.
There was a little fresh water creek that emptied into the ocean. I love the patterns in the sand that it made.
This seems very sculptural to me.
While at the beach I received an email from a friend of mine:
Oh Goddess of the Digital World,
I think you are on the road somewhere hopefully missing the rain here in Houston.
I would like for you to speak to my class on the digital world in the fall, a graduate level introduction to Public History. We will meet on Monday nights.
What reading have you assigned in the past? Would you like for the class to read Digital History: A Guide to Gathering, Preserving, and Presenting the Past on the Web. It is authored by Daniel J. Cohen and Roy Rosenzweig.
There is also Clio Wired: The Future of the Past in the Digital Age authors are
Roy Rosenzweig (Author), Anthony Grafton (Introduction)
Oh yes, when in the semester is good for you?
Your humble archivist,
This was my response:
Oh humble Archivist,
I am happy to speak to your class about any and all things digital. Give me a chance to get off the beach in San Diego and I will tell you when. Also, I want to look for some other reading(s) since the first one you mentioned I think is a little dated.
The Goddess of the Digital World,
Michele

This was his response to my response:
1. Thank you for saying yes for the class.
2. Bitch, for being on the beach.
I can hardly fault him for the bitch comment seeing as how I was sort of being a bitch and he had been on a research vacation the week before and I believe that I called him some nasty names when he sent me photos of his family at the resort pool.
The rest of the week was spent in the hotel conference rooms or the fitness room (for me anyway). The hotel was built around a lovely pool and garden.
This little waterfall dropped off into a pool complete with some of the largest koi I've ever seen.
All and all it was a good trip. I learned a bunch more about copyright than I knew before or probably ever wanted to learn. Yes, you can thank Congress, Sonny Bono and Disney for our crazy copyright law.
On Sunday JR and I needed to pack up the truck with Dr. Boy's remaining stuff.
FYI, 90 degree heat is never a good time to move heavy boxes and furniture. We were more than a little sweaty by the time we were done. Nessa wasn't so fresh herself but than I had been complaining for a week or so that she smelled like a dog. At the end of the day we all had showers including Nessa.
Buried deep within the bed of the truck is our loveseat. We are donating it to the cause but this decision meant that we had to rearrange our living room a bit. Which necessitated a vacuuming and mopping session. Good thing we waited for those showers.
Nessa doesn't like the change all that much. We actually like it better, JR especially since the comfy chair and ottoman are right in front of the TV now (better to fall asleep in now). Though if we have a party with more than 4 people seating there might be an issue. I'm unconcerned.
Nessa and I are off to Oregon on Thursday. I'm not sure how much I will be able to post to the blog while I'm gone, not that I've been all that good about it for the last month anyway but I'll try to keep you in the know. I can thrill you with pictures of western Kansas. JOY!
Love,
M
But after the blah of Kansas you get the glory of the Rocky Mountains, so Kansas might be worth it.
ReplyDeleteHave a safe trip.
Or the deserts of Colorado....

We have a client in La Jolla. We have several in San Diego, which is where Beloved is this week. This weekend he flies to Vegas - AGAIN - and then to Oregon.
ReplyDeleteIf I didn't know that such traveling is tiring and not much fun, I might be inclined to call him a few choice names, too.
How does Disney affect copywright law? YES, I'M INTERESTED!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI can NOT believe how busy you are. You weren't kidding about that, although soaking up the joy that is La Jolla makes a lot of it worth it! Did you go to the caves?
ReplyDeleteHave fun in Oregon with Nessa!
