Spin Cycle - Crystal Bridges Museum

Gretchen has taken over the Spin Cycle from Jen lately And doing a mighty fine job of things. So much better than I'd ever do, what with being lazy and all. I've been so lazy that this will be my first attempt at a Spin since the change over. Go check out those with a much more participatory (read less lazy) attitude. Not now! After you look at the pretty pictures.

As I said on Tuesday we took a road trip over the weekend to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. We had seen a CBS Sunday Morning segment about it and decided right then that the next 3 day weekend we would go there. That 3 day weekend came up last weekend.

I'm sure you don't want to hear about the boring drive up or the long drive back home or the ubiquitous food served at the hotel breakfast. What you want to hear or actually see is some of the art. They let us take pictures. And take them I did until my trusty phone ran out of battery juice. Good thing nothing went wrong at home.

We spent 4 hours looking at paintings. 4 hours of me talking about brush strokes, the play of light, and perspective. 4 hours of me talking about technique, style and genre. JR's ears were bleeding. It was embarrassing. For me, JR was cool with it.

there was some mixed media. I didn't get a picture of it but there was this fantastic and huge installation that was made out of spools of thread. The spools were placed in such a way as to recreate the Last Supper upside down. Then you looked through this globe which made it right side up. It was very cool. Now, I have thoughts about what I can do with spools of thread.

I like this painting.
Don't know why.
Don't really care.
I just like it.

Norman Rockwell
Cool, No?

JR liked this one.
Says it reminds him of Glacier National Park.

Another one of my favs.
I love the colors.

Pretty watercolour!
Bad photograph!

Just a little about Crystal Bridges.
  • It is free to the public.
  • There are a ton of employees. I had to wonder if they were given the option of working at the Walmart down the street or the art museum. I would have taken the museum also.
  • It was one of the best laid out museums I've ever been in.
  • The grounds were beautiful even though the only things blooming were the dogwoods and tulip trees.

Love,
M

  1. That's an odd sort of flying carpet Rosie the riveter.
I like the first one, but he seemed to be a bit undecided. Those clouds are a bit discordant.

What's the German looking one ?.

    1. I agree, the artist could have smoothed out those clouds a bit. I'm not sure which one you are talking about...German looking?

    2. It's OK I looked it -the winter landscape by Francis Guy- up on the website. Brooklyn NYC of all places. Very Bavarian in structure. And not because of the snow either.

  2. You were barely an hour away from me! You should have come over for lunch.

  4. I like he same colorful building painting that you did. I enjoy museums very much, but I usually pick my favorite areas within them to visit. Otherwise, I'm too tired to enjoy whatever I see last.

  5. What lovely paintings!

I've been a lazy spinner, too. I've decided I'm just going to have to do those posts on Saturday.

  6. Until the boys are a bit bigger, we are sticking to the more interactive places to visit. I like wandering in art museums to look at whatever catches my eye. Too bad most are such a long drive from where we live, not counting the university art stuff, which gets a bit out there.

  8. Sounds like a wonderful museum. I forget that there are so many wonderful small museums around the country - good for you for supporting them. When you come to LA you'll have to hit LACMA and the Getty!

    You are linked!!

  10. I'm surprised that they let you take pictures. Tells you how long it's been since I've been to an art museum.
