January 2nd will live in infamy around here

January 2nd.
January 2nd I was driving home from work.
January 2nd I was driving home from work on the I-45 freeway.
January 2nd I was driving home from work on the I-45 freeway in my old blue bomb.
January 2nd I was driving home from work on the I-45 freeway in my old blue bomb when it decided that it had had enough.
January 2nd I was driving home from work on the I-45 freeway in my old blue bomb when it decided that it had had enough and lost it's transmission.

As soon as I can arrange it I will donate the remains to the local public television station. They will actually take it in it's present condition. I know! I was surprised when I talked to them. I didn't even lie and say something like; "well, you know the car runs fine if you never want to get out of first gear or go more than 27 miles per hour" or "Hey, it does a great job of going in reverse!" or "oh sure, the rear bumper is half gone and the inside door panels are falling off and the windows don't really go down well but its got brand new tires!"

So what did we replace it with? Because you knew we had to. I need a car. I need a car NOW! Why did I need a car immediately? Because, Houston is not known for their stellar public transportation system. Or really any decent public transportation. Or even really sub-par public transportation. Which makes me pine for San Fransisco, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Washington DC or Baltimore. Places with mass transit.

*sigh* We bit the bullet and bought a brand new car. JR and I haven't bought a new car since 1986 but we did this time.

Isn't it adorable!

I wanted a Honda S2000 but Honda hasn't made new ones since 2005. We did see a used one on the lot and it was a very tough decision but we went with the Honda Fit. A very practical car. The only thing that makes me feel better is that we went with the bright red color. Makes me feel saucy.

I am also feeling very supportive of my schools. My undergrad degree is from Washington State University, who's colors are crimson and gray, my grad degree is from Indiana University, who's colors are crimson and cream, and I work at the University of Houston, who's colors are red and white. See...I'm all collegent like that.

That is what we are doing around here. What about you? Anything exciting? Since, I am now broke I will need to live vicariously through all of you.

Love,
M

  2. John is drooling over his dad's 2011 Avalon. My only say in it is that he has to pay cash. Guess who's put a freeze on my already puny home improvement fund? :-/
Congrats on the new car though! xoxo

  3. We love our car, a 2008 Nissan Altima. We especially love it because it will be paid off in a year.

We totally understand your reluctance to buy a new car, we really do.

  4. How adorable! I wish my next car could be that small. And I'm dreading having to replace my old blue wagon. Maybe if I tell the wagon about your blue car's fate, it will be incentivized to stay alive longer!

  5. That's a pretty one! Great choice of colors, and love how you found a way to tie it into your college connections.

Sorry about the transmission situation though. Unexpected things like that are never fun.

  6. We MUST get a cute vehicle SOON too. But hubs went trucking with no time to go shopping so Ol' Sub and I are still bonding. Its up to 265,000+ miles, the battery light flashes off and on(cant find the short after 2 yrs), but still faithfully puts on one mile after the other!!
But first we must decide what we really want to replace Ol' Sub with....then we can get the search on!! That decision has been hashed over and over MANY times in the past 2 years too!
    Decisions. Decisions.

Enjoy rocking out in your cute bright beauty!!

  10. RIP old blue bomb. THat Honda is CUTE. And I love the red. And it's nice and bright, so everybody will see you. I'm convinced that the subtle silver green color of my Prius is why I keep getting hit! Next car will be either red or white. Congrats on the new car smell.
