Go Red for Women Day

It is "Go Red For Women Day" today. So if you haven't already left the house stumble back into your closet and please pull out something red to wear. I have a real connection with this particular event because, as my cardiologist says, "Michele, you are a heart attack waiting for a place to happen".

Yep, skinny little vegetarian me has 4 of the 5 factors that leads to heart disease. God bless genetics.

Anyhoo, this day is to raise awareness of the symptoms of a heart attack in women. We suffer them different than men. My little incident at 44 years old taught me what to look for the hard way. Let's make sure other women don't have to learn it like that.

So please wear red today.

Now for something completely different: Zombies

On a lighter note this was too funny to pass up.

  1. Oh my gosh, Michele. Please take care of yourself. I've got high cholesterol, too, although I'm working on it and it is steadily coming down. Thanks for the reminder to be heart healthy today -- and every day.

  2. I hope that you're careful, girl! Genetics are a bitch.

I feel terrible I forgot to wear red. I have a big ole pimple on my nose. Maybe that counts.

    Yeah for healthy women everywhere!!!

  3. This is a great post. Heart disease runs rampant in my family too (part of the reason I get my butt to the gym).

  4. Crap, I forgot. My cheeks are red with shame. Does that count?

  7. I wore a red coat this morning when I took eldest to kindergarten. Luckily we didn't encounter any zombies today.

  9. Wow, that's scary. High blood pressure and diabetes both run rampant in my family but so far, I've had neither.

I didn't wear red today but Elliot did. Does that count?

  12. Oh yes, I inherited those genes from my parents too. I could eat Vegan and still have a high cholesterol. Thanks for reminding us to take care of ourselves.

  13. I hope you get annual check ups and take whatever meds you need to take. I'm lucky I have low blood pressure and I exercise quite a bit so I keep my cholesterol in check but b/c of Friday, I am going to make an appt. with my Doc for a check up as it has been almost four years.

  14. Steppin': Genetics suck. I did go vegan for awhile just to see if it would help. Nada!

Bern: Every year I hit the doctors office. Me and every 70 year old. It's so much fun.

  15. I can see the humour in that - the zombie sign, that is, not the heart problem.

The Dr told my Grandma 55 years ago she was a heart attack waiting to happen - she's still here.

  16. Michele,

Glad to see you're helping make people more aware of heart disease, especially women.

For all of your friends, I know a decent gym they can go work out in. Sadly, if they want cardiovascular benefits they'll only be able to work out during my shifts...
